Most fleet operators in Indian quarrying retire a wheel loader between 12,000 and 16,000 operating hours. Dasharath Singh's L959H just crossed 22,400 — and the second engine overhaul isn't on his calendar yet.

Sekhawati Enterprises operates out of Khetri, in Rajasthan's copper belt. Dasharath Singh is the owner — but he is also the operator, the night-shift supervisor and, on most Sundays, the man who walks the perimeter of his stone yard with a torque wrench. He bought his L959H in late 2017 from the SDLG dealer in Jaipur. At the time, he told us, he was comparing three brands. He picked the one whose service engineer had spent four hours on his site asking him about fuel quality and overnight parking before quoting.

Eight years later, the loader has moved an estimated 1.4 million tonnes of stone aggregate. That works out to roughly 63 tonnes per operating hour — at the upper end of what a 3.0-cubic-metre bucket can deliver in a working day. Fuel consumption averages 9.8 litres per hour over the last three years; in his first machine of a different make, the same duty cycle returned 11.6 litres per hour.

Reliability at this scale is rarely about a single component. It is about a stack of small habits that compound over a decade. Singh changes hydraulic oil every 1,800 hours, not 2,000. He runs the machine through a 15-minute idle warm-up before every shift in Rajasthan winters where ambient temperatures drop to single digits. Air filters get replaced on a calendar, not on a sensor warning. And he runs his machine on the original ZF transmission with the factory-recommended SDLG transmission fluid — no substitutions, no compromises.

The loader still starts the same way it did the day we bought it. That's reliability you don't read in a brochure.

The other half of the story belongs to the SDLG dealer in Jaipur. Their service engineer Ramesh has visited Khetri 41 times since 2018 — half on scheduled service, half on what he calls "social calls". Spare parts have always arrived within the 24-hour SLA window from the Mumbai regional warehouse. When the engine ECU needed reflashing in 2022 after a CEV-Stage IV firmware update, the team coordinated a Saturday-night session so the machine could be back at work by 6 a.m. Monday.

Singh keeps his L959H's hour-meter logbook in a Godrej cabinet in his site office. Every entry is in his own handwriting — fuel filled, oil changed, components replaced, downtime hours. He let our editorial team photograph the pages. Total unscheduled downtime over eight years: 47 hours. Total scheduled service downtime: 380 hours. The machine has spent 99.4% of its working life actually working.

The L959H is no longer the newest wheel loader in Sekhawati's yard — Singh added a second L968H last year for a contract with a cement major. He runs both machines himself. Asked whether he would consider switching brands on the next purchase, he laughed. "I'll switch when this one stops starting. So far it's never said no."
